About the position

We are looking for an ambitious and enterprising Digital Marketing Manager to take our social content to the next level and expand the depth and breadth of audiences we engage with.

You’ll have experience producing content that resonates and using it to grow an audience – ideally in a fast-paced environment that can be reactive as well as proactive. This role joins the audience team during an exciting period of growth. The number of donors supporting our work is growing, as are those following us on different channels. We begin to experiment and test what motivates people who consume, or we would like to consume our journalism. Over the coming months and years, we plan to expand this rapidly – so that you’ll strive to come up with ideas and honestly assess whether they’re effective.

Above all, our development as a team helps oD bring about change. This work is backed by a strong track record of investigative journalism that has sparked legislative changes, parliamentary inquiries, criminal investigations and more. You will enjoy working closely with fellow journalists, developing their skills and knowledge of how to communicate effectively.

Objective of the role and main responsibilities

  • Support the delivery and growth of openDemocracy audience and fundraising goals. Allowing us to serve our mission to challenge power and inspire change across the world.
  • Act as newsletter manager overseeing openDemocracy’s growing portfolio of regular and ad-hoc email newsletters. Develop and monitor fan journeys, reader donation campaigns, email and social media insights and analytics. Help identify what works and what doesn’t.
  • Develop and manage openDemocracy’s organic and paid social media. Content creation and supervision for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Youtube.

Main responsibilities

  • Produce engaging social media posts, oversee community engagement/moderation, and manage day-to-day organic social media curation and scheduling on our channels
  • Lead horizon scanning, social listening and identify opportunities for openDemocracy to get the most out of our content.
  • Co-develop paid social media plans on existing channels, taking into account the opportunities presented by emerging channels.
  • Develop, test and evaluate ideas independently and with colleagues, sharing learnings and best practices with the entire team.
  • Create video and image assets for social media campaigns
  • Guide our engagement with our communities on our platforms
  • Work as a team to achieve common engagement and audience goals

Digital communication and fundraising

  • Be responsible for the day-to-day execution of the fundraising strategy for openDemocracy reader donations, including:
    – Work with the Impact Manager to write, edit and send proactive and reactive fundraising emails.
    – Lead the development of our newsletter products, including our weekly and daily flagship newsletters.
    – Reports on the results of all email campaigns.
    – Design, implement, test and iterate segmented reader journeys to increase engagement and grow the openDemocracy mailing list
  • Contribution to workflow, website development and selection of our suite of software tools.
  • Consideration of the budget and the definition of the objectives and the re-forecasting process
  • Report marketing results to staff at core team meetings
  • Support feature writers and journalists in developing and executing digital marketing campaigns and fundraising work on their projects
  • Build and maintain donation pages for grassroots fundraising as well as projects
  • Support the editorial team on SEO best practices and monitor search trends.

Person Specification (Essential)

  • Experience managing social media channels and producing effective, legally compliant content that converts.
  • Understanding the audiences that exist on each channel and the content and approaches that interest and don’t interest them
  • A proven track record of growing audiences and developing ongoing engagement through social media and other digital content
  • A curious, independent mindset that seeks out new ideas, evaluates quickly, and learns quickly from tests that don’t work.
  • Experience managing digital advertising, including testing and evaluation.
  • Trust and experience with each of our key channels. These are Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, email, browser notifications and Instagram.
  • Experience working in a team to produce graphic and video content under tight deadlines, often with limited budgets.

Person specification (desirable)

  • Experience working with remote teams and in a media/campaign/social impact environment.
  • Experience managing budgets for advertising and social media campaigns
  • Working knowledge of at least some of the software tools we include: Adobe Creative Suite, Echobox, Facebook Business Manager, Webpushr, Sendible, Crowdtangle, Klaviyo, Buzzsumo, Civi CRM, Trello, Canva and Slack.
  • Knowledge and experience of creating email campaigns that drive action (fundraising, campaigns, social change..)
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the values ​​of public service news and their connection to social content, reader revenue growth and the oD brand.
  • Proficiency in an additional language in which openDemocracy publishes regularly, such as Spanish or Russian.
  • Experience implementing, monitoring and evaluating marketing automation tools.
  • Experience working with external freelancers, such as graphic designers, video editors and journalists.
